I hear from many of you that you'd love to have more art in your homes but either think of original art as out of your price range or you have no idea where to shop. Since art is something that speaks to everyone differently, I've decided to use my blog to feature talented, local, well priced artists in hopes of helping you find something that speaks to you. If you see an artists here that you like, I encourage you to visit their website and to see their work in person.
On Friday I went to see my new friend and local artist Martha Whitfield's show here in Charlotte at local home store and hot spot Slate. I was blown away by Martha's artistic range with works in pencil, charcoal, acrylics, oils, and her use of layered materials, paper and canvas.
Below is a glimpse of the pieces she's currently showing at Slate... If you see something that interests you, please stop by and see it in person, as my photography skills certainly do not do them justice!

More about Martha....
Martha is a Charlotte native and has taught private and group sessions in drawing, painting, and expressive arts through her business, Temenos* Studio, for over 20 years. She has an extensive background in art therapy, and an MA in International Women’s Studies.
Inspired by the color and looseness of the California Abstract Expressionists, Martha is also intrigued and challenged by the work of Milton Avery, Giorgio Morandi, and Georgia O’Keeffe, particularly how they capture essence with simple form. Martha pursues her expression through painting, found object sculpture, fiber arts and gardening.
Her figurative work is often layered, splattered and etched with lines, reflecting the complexity of “character.” Says Martha, “I am interested in what is beneath the gauzy wrap of our public mask–the subterranean layers of our soul. My hope is that these “archetypal figures” strike a chord, connecting viewers to the human community.”
